However, there is still an element of accessible pop music in the many-sided instrumentation of the American’s compositions. The playfulness, the excess of detail and the transitions between anything from synthesizers to cembalo, from beauty to eeriness, is invested in a melodious material that can be related to in countless ways.

Julia Holter creates ambitious avant-garde pop saturated with atmosphere, which rewards the willing and attentive listener to a great degree. Great art is hidden here in outwardly timid music.
