R&B singer Kelela has quickly become a muse of the electronic music scene. Her crooning is put on top of a British-like dark metropolitan sound.

Kelela’s take on modern R&B is raw, radical and seems to have a self-chosen opposition to the all-devouring mainstream. At the same time fans of more pinkish R&B singers like Mariah Carey and Aaliyah will also nod their heads in recognition when the American with the Ethiopian roots gets behind the microphone.

The critically applauded mixtape Cut 4 Me is just the early beginnings for a singer who approaches her audience with a liberating realness and nerve.

R&B with a hard bass-filled foundation
