”Genres are not for us,” says Merchandise’s crooner Carson Cox. The gang used to be part of Florida’s hardcore scene, but most people cherish the band for their American update of The Smiths and Joy Division. They tackle their mainly British inspirations with a fondness of atmosphere and experiments that resulted in lengthy songs on their 2013 mini album Totale Nite.
However, their planned 2014 album finds the band on legendary label 4AD and with an altogether new modus operandi. The noisy romantics plan to reinvent themselves as a pop band. Merchandise keep on rewriting their own book, but every tone this band produces has an integrity only found among the upper echelons of alternative rock.
Band schedule is ready in May
Roskilde Festival releases the time schedule in May, if everything works out at least somewhat according to plan.
We don’t do it until then to make the best schedule possible for our audience. When we, for various reasons, are forced to make changes late in the process, we have a better chance at putting together a programme that considers both the spreading of genres, the performer's touring plans and safety at the festival.
