THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA led by BACHIR ATTAR (MA)

Thursday 03.07.14 - 00:30 - Pavilion

The beat author William S. Burroughs, referring to the ancient history of their music, hailed them as a ”4000-year-old rock and roll band”. However, you should not expect easy listening in 4/4. The master musicians play traditional music from Morocco with complex rhythms served up in a raw sound and tempo, which was probably what caused the image to pop up in Burrough's mind.

In 1971 recordings of the band made by Brian Jones – when the Rolling Stones guitar player visited the band in 1968 – were released. This made him one of the first rock musicians to introduce The Master Musicians of Jajouka and world music in general to the Western World.

The master musicians from the village in the Rif Mountains have stood out as one of the pinnacles of the region’s spiritual music with their trance-inducing mixture of Arabian oboe, chanting, lute, pan flute and percussion.
