Quick guide for the search
X

  • Wildcard-Search
With the help of a so-called wildcard you can look for several search words, which have the same word beginning. If you search e.g. for "Typo*", the search will find everything that begins with "Typo" : Typo3, Typoscript, Typocode, Typo3user... etc.
  • Negative search
If you do not want to find certain expressions in your search result, you can cause this with placing a hyphen in front. Terms containing this phrase are excluded from the search result.
  • Search for user
It is possible to limit the search result on answers of certain users. In addition to the retrieval query attach still another "user:username" and find the results, which were written by this certain user. If the username could not be found this will be ignored.

European music players are required by law to have a very low limit on their output, which is a total bitch when hooking up to anything other than earbuds. iPods are hackable, but I've been unable to do so myself as of yet.

Luckily you don't actually need to with a TA2020 based amp. You can just set the gain of the amp higher instead (of course you'll have to know how to do that which is why I need to know if I'm right in my assumption, and need to know precisely which TA2020 based amp it is).

It's this one http://cgi.ebay.com/T-Amp-Integrated-Amplifier-Tripath-TA2020-20WX2+Adapter_W0QQitemZ260388656223QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090405?IMSfp=TL090405155002r18952 Hope you can help.

Before anything else is done. I need you to confirm that you used an mp3 player as source. And I need you to confirm that if you use a PC (not a laptop ... a PC) as source instead, the volume is much much much higher.

Yes, we started out by using an ipod nano and were disapointed, but when we hooked up to a pc it was way louder, we also tried a laptop and it wasn't as loud as the pc but def louder than the ipod. oh and the ipod had 100% gain boost

Good. Then my assumption that the gain is set way too low for portable use is correct. I need you to take a close up photo of the 5 resistors in front of the chip and post it here ... so I can see which ones you need to replace.

Deleted user To my knowledge, a 'soft' gain boost will only reduce the dynamic range (compress the shit out of) your mp3's. To actually increase the signal amplitude requires a firmware hack, which I've been unable to get any help with for the iPod nano. (I've got the same problem)

I guess you'll have to hear from Saturnus on how to adjust the amp gain.

You can also get a neutrik cable with a 4:1 signal trafo built in but they are pricey as hell. Replacing 2 resistors is much cheaper.

I think we will try replacing the resistors for starters, I'll upload a photo later when i get home from work.
But just because I'm curious, how much does such a cable cost? And do you have a link?

No link, they don't make them anymore. I think I remembered they were around $200 for a stereo cable. But with a little soldering skill you can make your own for about DKK100 or so.

You upload it to an off-site host page, and link to it here.

Can't get the photo thing to work. So I was wondering, if you live in CPH, if me and my freind could come by sometime this week and you could help us out by taking a closer look? It's just this forum is getting old really fast. Oh and I noticed on the resistors that they are each marked with the number 100. Don't know if that will help.

WTF? There's only 2 steps to be made.

1) Host image, eg. here http://imageshack.us/

2) Post URL here

I can't do it this week, maybe next but I'll charge you standard workshop fees for the trouble since it's meant as a diy thing, not a buy thing.

Good that's the output coils and some of the output diodes, now what I need is a picture of the 5 resistors on the other side of the chip.

From the picture on ebay they are on the left corner when seen from the front. They are 5 round things right next to eachother, 4 look almost the same while 1 is a different colour.

Could you rehost this image but resize it to 800x600 or something that won't take several hours to download.

It's faster with firefox. But if you insist I'll do it as soon as I get home.

Hi

I'm planning to go on the junkyard on saturday, 'cause me and my two pals plan to build our own cheap boombox. I have settled on to buy one of those amp6basic bandits, but is there a reason why you (Saturnus) have two of those? One for each speaker?

Anyways, I would be happy if you guys told me what to look for.
How do I know if the speaker has high sensitivity?
And as well, is it enough to have two car batteries for Ipod, charger, speaker and the amp6beta, and no sun-panels?

I have no experience with this at all. But as this is my 7th Roskilde without a real musicanator, I REALLY want this to happen. All help accepted.

I only have one amp6basic in each of my Boominators, don't know where you got the idea I use 2 amps in each?

You can't really know if the speaker have high sensitivity unless you know what speakers it is.

2 Car batteries will last around 200 hours (8.3 days) at full maximum volume 24 hours a day, if you need it to recharge an iPod too on the same battery, it'll be around 130-140 hours contineuos running time.

Oh ok, it's me who is wrong then. I followed the link of the pictures of your boombox, and I saw two amp6basics, and though they were in the same boombox icon_smile.gif
But thanks a lot. Guess I'll have to "trial and error" my forward with the speakers.

Wait, how about the batteries? Do I need some kind of a power transformer or such?

EDIT: scrolling the 41hz.com forum. 'Tis a good help, arr.

No, but you'll need a car adaptor for to the iPod.
