We might as well start re-making these threads.
I just realized that with the giant gravel pit on the best camping spots and a pretty big area reserved for the climate camping - also on a pretty good spot it seems - getting a decent spot will be tough this year.

I guess it depends where exactly theyve filled in from previous years digging. If there's more room near the lake area (or Service East) then Ill be a happy bunny.
How big is the climate camping area?

Getting good spots is overrated IMO
It doesnt seem to make THAT much of a difference...people always talk about how far away some of the places are from the concert area, but last year I stayed at kind off i mixture between M and P (M was at the very north of the East side, P was at the very south), and i had just as much fun at both places! And it only took me about 5min to walk from P to the Orange Stage

I guess your both right. The area just north of the lake is nice, and theres probably more space now. I lived next to the gravel pit last year, just south of it in the "valley" between H and K, and it was a-okay.

Overrated? Hmmm...
I would possibly agree with you if it wasnt for:
- Spending a week in Silent Camp. No atmosphere whatsoever.
- Camping on a slope in both 04 and 07.
The location because of the walk to the arena doesnt bother me. There are enough food stalls/toilets within 5 mins of any tent, so thats out of the equation too. Getting a decent pitch is more about not making the same mistakes, if that makes sense. Some areas definitely have more atmosphere than others (that goes for East and West), regardless of how close they were to the arena.

Try staying in the wild west, between the entrance and the windmill and tell me it doesn't matter
Best place to be mate!

Mirichello: Are you referring to 06? I didn't mind that space, I just thought it was low on atmosphere being so 'out of the way'.
I really didn't care much for West last year. Give me East anyday.

Yup. Thats the space. Compared to our camps in 03, 04 and 05 (which were only about 150 metres away) it was such a difference. Never again.
I didnt mind West so much - scaling that bridge 6 times a day was abit of a struggle (although you could tell when you were drunk coz you couldnt count the steps anymore). But I definitely prefer East.

Been both to West and East, and to me East has the best atmosphere, is closest to the festival area and just generally feels a bit more like Roskilde than West does. The gravel pits invasion must be stopped. Can't we sabotage it somehow?

5 minutes?! How's that possible from P?
Took me 10 minutes from M in a normal walking pace.

Well, we could dig up all the gardens of the people who runs the gravel pit, and then use the dirt to fill it up Viva La Roskilde!

It won't - there are laws about this. And probably next year they start at West
The good thing is they'll also start filling up the hole on East so at some point the majority off the camping will be east I'm an east guy, by the way...
Another good thing is that the filled up areas are drained the best, so these areas survive a rain festival a lot better.

I didn't hate West, I just didn't find that it had the same atmosphere. Even 06 seemed to have more of an atmosphere, because we didn't stay in that Silent Camp area all the time, we did explore the rest of East too.

Maybe it depends how drunk you are, and how many detours you take along the way . In 2007 it took around 15 minutes to walk from there, the mud slowed the feet down so much. It seemed close, but didn't feel it.

Lets camp in the gravel pit!!!
Just wait a few years and you will! Seriously as far as I remember a somewhat large area in the south/western part of the pit will be opened for camping this year (or maybe next year)

I think it has been said by a Roskilde official that the gravel pit will be gradually filled in and eventually reused as camping space. They'll need it if they're going to start digging up West. As has been suggested here before, there's a strong possibility that once that gravel pit is completely filled in and in use for camping again, West could stop being used altogether.

Certain areas had been filled in, yet were still closed off. Definitely on the west side of the pit. Then again, you could see why it was closed off as it didnt look very suitable. Hopefully this will be ready for 09?

I participated in a Works Commitee regarding camping (focus on garbage) last year and they told us. But I believe it has been in the press as well.

Let's get one thing straight first. The company having the gravel pit rights are very sensitive to the Festivals needs, however they required by law to dig in the areas they have applied to, they cannot choose not to exploit the rights or they will be given to another company, potentially less sensitive to the Festivals needs. So any kind of protest or sabotage is at best pointless, and at worst detrimental.
As far as I know, areas previously exploited needs one or two years rest after being filled up for the earth to settle so they can be used for camping again. And I can definately see that the areas set on rest in 2007 would need another year before able to be used. So this year we might have 2 years worth of refilled areas available.
Either way, space will hardly be a problem, there was rather larges areas free on P even on Friday last year, so if you arrive late then heading there will be your safest bet.
