100 tons of steel for rock ’n rollBy Søren Folke Larsen It takes ten minutes to put up your tiny tent, incl. a beer break. With the canopy stage, it is different. It takes 15 men three days to build the stage. This is but a small percentage of all the engaged people making the big orange rock temple roll. During the festival, almost 900 workers, mainly volunteers, prepare the stage for bands, making the best sound and light and guarantying security. In 2001 Roskilde introduced the so-called pits. They fit 10.000 audiences when filled up, weigh 75 tons and together with the crowd safety crew in orange vests you can feel safe. The canopy tent is third generation, and it is from 2001. First generation from 1978 housed bands like Queen and The Rolling Stones. The stage does not seem giant when one stands up there but actually there are 1200 square meter floor carried by 22 tons of steel and 6-700 lamps, incl. the ones in the towers, light up Denmark’s number one festival stage. Do not expect the stage to move. The base reaches far down underneath the festival site, as well as tent and site match in the construction to prevent the tent drifting off. While you are there, do yourself a favour and look up to see “the Duck”. The stage mascot has been stolen several times but has always returned. It has its own facebook group. And then the only thing left to say is: ”WHAT’S UP ROSKILDEEEEEEEE!!!! Photo: Per Lange Photo: Per Lange Photo: Per Lange![]() | ![]() Photo: Per Lange |
