Recharge your batteries – with a camp game

Do you think football is for those who lack fantasy? Is a game of pole tennis just for sissies? Well don’t despair – here are five good camp games, which are tailor-made for festival life.

By Katrine Villadsen

A stick on a string is thrown on to the road, leave it there lying totally still. After some time a festival goer will attempt to pick it up. When this happens the person is measured with the stick. If he’s shorter than 3 times the length of the stick, the person is called “dwarf” and is invited to the camp to be made drunk. The game needs a bit of patience and beer for the dwarf.

A string is stretched over a passage, where festival goers pass by. One end is held by a participant, the other end can either be fixed, or held by another participant. When people come by, you sing a song and cheer, while the people are slipping under the string. This way the limbo dancer will gain a feeling of success for coming under in fine style.

Four camping chairs are placed in each corner of the playing field. It must not be larger than the players can speak to each other. The players take their seats in the chairs with a beer in one hand and the other hand free. Now the ball is passed between the players at a calm and slow pace, so that nobody has to stand up or stretch unnecessarily. Play for instance music to attract an audience. So they can fetch the ball if it misses its target person.

Six players are lined up as bowling pins. The rest of the camp stand back, and one person is appointed ball. The ball sits down on the ground, crouches in feotal position and makes sure - as far as possible - to hold his head against his knees. Now the aim is to toss the ball down towards the pins attempting to knock down as many as possible. The game gives the ball many fine little bruises.

Before the game begins, the whole camp should sit down and enjoy up to several beers for several hours. That makes it more fun. The hat is then placed on an empty piece of lawn. Now the players take turns to run up to the hat, place their fingertips on the crown of the hat and race around it 9 times while the rest of the camp is cheering. After this they have to turn at least 3 cartwheels without hitting any tents.
