Roskilde Cup 08 – soccer tournament for workers

The annual soccer tournament for workers is over. The tournament is a tradition – even though it has to be stated that last year, the event had to move indoor because of the rain – and the trophy was given to the winner of table soccer.

The winners of last year, “Yellow Stage” – as they stubbornly call themselves even though the scene changed title ages ago, is present carrying with them the alcoholic beverage ‘Old Danish’ as fuel.

Each team consists of six players. Replacement of players happens continuously as they are tired or thirsty… Free kick involves two minutes suspension. Generally there’s distinctive fair play mentality. There even exists a fair play trophy which is given to the team that performs the best behaviour in the field. 10 teams participate. Most of them are dressed in costumes and bring along a large number of supporters.

The game is 2 x 10 min. which seems like a realistic time frame even just after the first couple of games!

It is a motley crowd. All types of workers are represented at the game; stage crew, transport, commerce, fence, catering etc.

We bump in to Arnor and Bjarne who only take part to show their moral support. They both work at the festival and have been there from the beginning. “I haven’t missed one single festival”, tells Bjarne and remembers Burning Red Ivanhoe playing live in ’71.

At the tournament there is a prominent visitor as soccer referee Kim Milton Nielsen himself is going to judge the final. Of course he is going to work professionally. There is no distinction between World Championship and Roskilde Cup!

After a couple of games it becomes clear who the favourites are – Blacksmith bugs and Pavillion Stage. They both win all their games outright and are to meet each other in the final.

Pavillion gains great support from their personal cheerleaders who bring beer, hugs and battle songs. Blacksmith bugs definitely looses in supporters (only 4), but on the other hand they win the final and the trophy.

Pavillion shows good behavior as they break out in mass hugs for everyone, inklusive Kim Milton. They obtain, as deserved, the fair play trophy.

All in all a beautiful evening with a cosy atmosphere with no injuries and great fellowship.

See you next year!
