The Silent WarBy: Sofie Skamris Translated by: Anders Knudsen Shhh! If you are living in area J, you are living in a silent area. However, few people were aware of this as they put up their tents, as there were no signs saying anything about early bedtime in the area. The guests did not realise this until the service guards started asking people to turn down their music after 23.00. Some of the guests, who have been shushed several times, are the music lovers in the camp Bayern Lejren. They want to be allowed to play loud music even after 23.00. “No one knew that this was a silent area. We have planned to camp here for a long time, but haven’t read anywhere that we had to be silent here,” 23-year-old Christian Korsager says and points out that the only ones who have complained are the service guards. In the other end of the silent area, the wish for silence gets more support. “It would be really nice if they would turn down the music at night. It’s way too loud and it would be nice if they played more rock music” says 53-year-old Bjarne Due Annesen. As a service guard at the J area, Andreas Jeppesen has been around shushing the guests. “We ask them to turn down the music, and if this does not work, we call in the security guards.” Esben Danielsen, spokesman for Roskilde Festival, says that the silent area is there because of popular demand. But he is well aware of the fact that some guests have been forced to camp other places than they originally planned. “We should probably check out if we have set aside too large an area” Esben Danielsen says. He has a positive attitude towards the collection of signatures with the agenda of changing J’s status from silent area to party area. “We always listen to the audience, and the guests are welcome to express their opinions." On Monday no guests in the area would admit to be total party killers.
