The singing chefs

It has to be the world’s best diet – doing what Cooking Band Camp does. Instead of making food from a recipe, they sing them. And if you have a recipe you would like to hear, you can swing by H 46, where the happy chefs will perform it for you.

The 10 members of the camp do not look like skin and bones when we arrive. The happy chefs do not hesitate for a second when we ask for a test which is the song “Lamb Chop Provencale”. When the group reaches the part of the recipe that tells you to add salt and pepper, everybody sings along, some of them even in canon. “We pick up the melody along the way but mainly we draw on blues rhythms”, explains Thomas whose chef’s apron is decorated with the following text: The filet specialist: a.k.a. the stiff cock” – cock being similar to the Danish word for chef (kok).

The idea for the camp arose a couple of months ago in a place far away from cooking school. The members of the band Only Mortal were rehearsing when they suddenly began singing from a Danish cookbook. It sounded so good that it became the theme of their Roskilde Festival trip. To the question on whether or not they can actually cook, their answers are somewhat evasive. “I can maybe boil an egg,” Jesper says to save some of the camp’s honour.

The camp’s neighbours enjoy the many good songs and the fact that you are always offered a beer when visiting. However, nobody wants to eat food in there, which is probably a good idea considering the hygienic standards: Most of the plates are covered in dirt, the trash has been turned into a drum set and the chef’s aprons have seen whiter days.

Jesper tells that they have a clear purpose with competing in the competition: ”We want to win backstage tickets. Our big dream is to play on Orange Stage one day with our chefs band – and it is always nice to know the stage beforehand.
