The Telstar Sound Drone – Well-founded acidheadsBy: Thomas Meesenburg Even though The Telstar Sound Drone is a new acquaintance on the Danish music scene, they know where they are going musically. And the road goes through contemplation and psychrock instead of fleeting zapping. The Telstar Sound Drone is a band where things are thought through. The quartet from Copenhagen does not yet have a record deal, but they know what they want with their music. The tracks are twisted and turned, jammed and argued over intensely before they are completed and even the band name, referring to the world’s first communications satellite, has a well thought out origin. “We agreed on the name because it sends a signal about what we think the satellite should have done. It was a kind of golden opportunity to give the people of Earth the possibility to communicate, but this did not happen. All the things that we could have obtained with global communications, are far from achieved,” explains Hans Beck, drummer in the band. The preference for the sixties is distinct in the spirit of the band, and musically there is an eye to the psychedelic tones of that time: “The music from the sixties has great durability, and it expresses a belief in new experiences and a belief that you can make the world a better place,” says lead singer Mads Saaby. An open mind is required if the bands noisy acid rock tracks are to be fully unfolded. The Telstar Sound Drone engages in slow structures, and they do not stand in the way of playing the same riff over and over for 5 minutes. “Music is drones and things that keep on going, and that is something different from a zapping culture where new things are needed to stimulate. This opens up for the possibility of resting in something for a longer time, thus getting an understanding of and an absorption in this, instead of the need to get stroboscopic lights in the eyes at all times.” Mads explains. | ![]() The Telstar Sound Drone - photo: Michael Flarup |
