FRIDAY 4 JULY

Timeless folk music with vulnerability, strength and an incredible voice

  • Friday 4 July

Everything superfluous is stripped away as Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Annahstasia performs her songs that hit the audience with a timeless power.

She herself credits much of her musical inspiration to an iPod her uncle gave her when she was 14. A musical universe of soul, jazz, blues, and folk allowed her to immerse herself in artists like Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, and Nina Simone. She approaches her idols in her own songs with unpolished grace and raw intensity, carried by a stunning voice that certainly recalls Nina Simone — yet also speaks from a bare and deeply personal place within Annahstasia herself.

She typically records her songs in a single take to preserve an authentic DIY aesthetic, which was evident on her excellent debut album Sacred Bull (2019) and further developed on releases like the 2023 EP Revival. This June, she’ll release the highly anticipated album Tether, led by the beautiful first single “Villain.”

Annahstasia herself has called her music "power folk", as folk music for her is a space where she finds the strength to be herself. As she has said in an interview about folk music: "It is you in the most honest and free way". Vulnerability and strength go hand in hand in songs that allow for a queer position and a soulful depth that we look forward to experiencing live at Roskilde Festival.
