Everything superfluous is stripped away as Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Annahstasia performs her songs that hit the audience with a timeless power.
She herself attributes much of her musical inspiration to an iPod her uncle gave her when she was 14 years old. A musical world of soul, jazz, blues and folk that allowed her to immerse herself in the likes of Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield and Nina Simone.
She approaches these idols in her own songs with unpolished grace and raw nerve, and with a stunning vocal that certainly recalls Nina Simone, but also speaks from a naked place within Annahstasia herself. She typically records her songs in one take to maintain an authentic DIY aesthetic, as heard on her excellent debut album, Sacred Bull (2019), which she has expanded on with releases like the Revival EP from 2023.
Annahstasia herself has called her music "power folk", as folk music for her is a space where she finds the strength to be herself. As she has said in an interview about folk music: "It is you in the most honest and free way". Vulnerability and strength go hand in hand in songs that allow for a queer position and a soulful depth that we look forward to experiencing live at Roskilde Festival.
