During their concert on the Orange Stage on Wednesday evening, Fontaines D.C. chose to include an activist act featuring a range of political messages, including criticism of Israel and Denmark’s colonial history.
These messages did not cross our boundaries for what we accept as artistic and political freedom of expression. However, we recognise that the act has sparked debate and criticism. And that is entirely valid.
Roskilde Festival is a space for art, music, and community. It is also a place for conversation and the exchange of opinions. We believe that art and culture play a vital role in youth culture and in a democratic society.
As a festival, we provide space for artistic freedom of expression. Even when the disagreements are significant.
We engage in dialogue with artists about format and context before performances, but we do not edit or control what artists choose to express.
Artists at Roskilde Festival have the right to use their time on stage to speak out on political and societal issues. This does not represent the festival’s own views, but rather the voice of the individual artist regardless of whether the audience or we as organisers share those views or not.
When artists’ messages spark public debate and criticism, we see this as an important part of a vibrant and democratic exchange of ideas.
At the same time, we maintain clear boundaries. Roskilde Festival does not permit hate speech, discrimination, or incitement to violence on our stages, among our audience, or in any of our communities.
We always assess expressions specifically and in their context. If an expression is judged to have crossed our boundaries, we make a concrete decision and act accordingly. That is our responsibility as organisers.
We are aware that certain expressions can provoke strong emotions and be perceived in very different ways depending on who you are. It is precisely in these kinds of situations that freedom of expression must go hand in hand with responsibility.
We listen to the responses we receive, and we take them seriously.
Because Roskilde Festival is a place that makes room for art, opinions, and diversity without compromising others’ dignity or safety.
Enjoy the rest of the festival – safely and respectfully.
