Genre-defying drummer combines vulnerable songs and wild sonic excesses

  • Monday 30 June

Under the stage name J. Ludvig III, the versatile and eminent drummer and producer Jonathan Jull Ludvigsen has found a channel to unfold a universe that testifies to great creativity, genre openness and a sense of both fragile songwriting and physically overwhelming beats.

As part of the trio Athletic Progression, Ludvigsen already caused a stir with his free-flowing and mutating drumming that drew on jazz, hip-hop and breakbeats. He received acclaim at home and abroad, and since then he has toured the world with the likes of Erika de Casier and Liv.e.

In 2021, he released his debut solo album under the J. Ludvig III name. The album Sadboy Fusion was unlike anything else with its strange hybrids of off-kilter beats and angelic autotune vocals that together created a contrasting sound universe for a vulnerable songwriter. Even more ambitious are the wild genre reconstructions and rhythmic explorations of 2024's EMOTAN  – a magnificent breakup album that throws the listener into sonic labyrinths guided by a voice on the verge of breaking and with elements of emo rock, pop and alternative metal.

J. Ludvig III brings this explosive energy and complex rhythmic sequences to the stage, where both the vulnerability and strength of the project unfolds with a gripping intensity that we look forward to experiencing at Roskilde Festival.
