Although her debut EP, The Drive Home, wasn't released until last year, Samara Cyn has already been predicted to be one of American rap's rising superstars. Indeed, the Tennessee native has the voice and personality to make it to the top with a sound that fuses southern hip-hop with R&B and neo-soul.
Her style is reminiscent of rap star Doechii, who you can also experience at this year's Roskilde Festival. But Samara Cyn definitely has her own sound that oozes raw attitude, while her songs manage to embrace complex emotions and relationships.
The soul and R&B-infused sound harks back to defining names like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. The latter even invited Samara Cyn to join her on stage for a big concert recently, a seal of approval from one of Cyn's great role models. Cyn has also referenced more recent inspirations like rapper Noname, and like Noname, her songs have both high lyrical ambition and an almost jazzy flow.
Both the EP The Drive Home and recent singles such as "Pop n Olive" have fuelled the hype. Now Denmark will finally get the chance to experience the rapper live when she visits Roskilde Festival this summer.
