With his blend of samba, pop and soul, Seu Jorge is a defining figure on the modern Brazilian music scene. A singer and songwriter who has both catalysed a major samba revival in Brazil and spread the sound of modern samba-pop to the rest of the world. The legend has just released the album Baile à la Baiana - his first album of original material in a decade - and with it, he will be performing a rare Danish concert with his large and sublime orchestra.
Music has always been a guiding star for Jorge, who spent years living homeless in Rio de Janeiro, but found a spiritual home in the city's rich music scene, where he made a name for himself for his contributions to the local baile funk parties and samba circles. He began releasing music in the late 90s, but it was the 2001 album Samba Esporte Fino that really made him an international name. Building on the tradition of Brazilian icons such as Jorge Ben and Gilberto Gil, he brought the legacy into the 21st century in collaboration with Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato.
A string of successful albums have followed, while Jorge has garnered acclaim as an actor in films such as City of God and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. In the latter, he made a name for himself by interpreting several of David Bowie's songs with such poignant originality that Bowie himself had to bow down.
On his brand-new album Baile à la Baiana, Jorge once again takes us deep into Brazilian music traditions such as baile funk and samba, while creating a modern sound. In particular, the album is a tribute to the African roots of Brazilian music culture, which is a breeding ground for both samba grooves and afropop. It's also an album that is a great match for Roskilde Festival and the Orange Stage, because as the master himself has said about the album's basic energy in an interview with TimeOut: "When summer arrives, everyone wants to gather - at the beach, at festivals, in the cities. People want to be together!"
