FRIDAY 4 JULY

Unique blend of techno, folklore and protest music from Réunion

  • Friday 4 July

Jako Maron's vibrant music combines the traditional folk music of Réunion Island with electronic innovations and inspiration from techno. The result is truly a genre of its own: Electro Maloya.

Maloya music has been called Réunion's answer to the American blues. A musical tale of oppression and suffering, but also of proud roots, told through expressive percussion and vocals. For a long time it was banned by the French colonial power because it gave voice to an oppressed Creole population. Maloya therefore also became an essential part of the struggle for independence on Réunion in the 1970s.

The anti-colonialist protest of Maloya as well as its obsessive rhythms are transformed by Jako Maron via drum machines and analog synths into a captivating hybrid music that became widespread through the Nyege Nyege Tapes release Les Experiences Electro Maloya de Jako Maron from 2018.

In 2025, Nyege Nyege will release the new album Mahavélouz, which once again shows an artist paving new paths for revolutionary electronic dance music by delving into old and rich folk music traditions. A very special experience awaits you at Roskilde Festival.
