Nadah El ShazlyEG

Lush mix of electronics, jazz and Middle Eastern sounds from visionary Cairo musician

One of the most important voices in the experimental Arabic music scene will be visiting Roskilde Festival when Egyptian Nadah El Shazly finally performs this summer.

In 2022, Nadah El Shazly graced the cover of music magazine The Wire as a leading figure in Cairo's progressive music scene. Nadah El Shazly started her music career in the city's punk scene, but quickly moved into electronic music and jazz, which she combines with elements of traditional Middle Eastern music, harp playing and expressive vocals in a very personal style.

Her debut solo album, Ahwar (2017), garnered excellent reviews from a host of leading music media, including comparisons to Björk and Annette Peacock. Ahwar was created in collaboration with Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi (Land of Kush), and the album has brought Nadah El Shazly to a number of important festivals such as Le Guess Who? and Rewire.

Since her acclaimed debut album, the creative artist has recorded several soundtracks, starred in a movie, and launched the experimental duo Pollution Opera. A new solo album is finally on the way, perfectly timed for Roskilde Festival, where Nadah El Shazly will perform with a full band.
