"Brightly coloured, dizzyingly detailed, and wildly fun" wrote Pitchfork about the new collaboration between Peruvian artist Alejandra Cárdenas (aka Ale Hop) and Congolese guitarist Titi Bakorta. Rapturous words about the obsessive rhythms and creative guitar explorations that leap out at the listener as the duo unfolds.
The collaboration between the two masterful musicians can be heard on the new album Mapambazuko, released this year on the progressive label Nyege Nyege Tapes, based in Kampala, where the album was recorded.
On Mapambazuko Ale Hop and Titi Bakorta master the rare art of creating music that is experimental, eccentric and damn catchy at the same time. Based on exuberant guitar patterns, they juggle traditional music from their respective cultures, hypnotic pop and avant-garde. It's completely original and at the same time impossible not to dance to.
The inventive blend of Congolese folk music and the soukous dance genre that made Bakorta's debut album Molende a dazzling experience is central to the sound. Add to that Ale Hop's visionary approach, mixing psychedelic moods, mutated cumbia and traditional Peruvian rhythms, and you have a unique combination. Best of all, the dazzling duo can be experienced live when they perform their first Danish concert at Roskilde Festival this summer.
