Attending a concert with Alice Longyu Gao is an immersive experience where visual art, performance, classic harp playing and adventurous hyperpop come together in extravagant explosions.
The US-based Chinese musician, DJ and performance artist has earned a reputation as one of the pioneers of hyperpop, but also as a maverick who has practically defined their own musical universe. Gao has found fans in pop stars such as Lady Gaga, has DJ’ed at museums such as MoMA and the Parrish Art Museum, and has been invited to create music for major fashion shows and The Sims 4 game.
Gao, who defines themself as pansexual, activistically uses their music to support a queer community, attacking heteronormative ideals with both humor and fury. Tellingly, their powerful 2023 EP was titled: Let's Hope Heteros Fail, Learn, and Retire.
Most recently, Gao released the album Assembling Symbols Into My Own Poetry, proving that their unconventional blend of electronic pop, wild experiments and cultural activism is in a league of its own, and you can expect an otherworldly show when they visit Roskilde Festival this summer.
