From her debut album Xen (2014), Venezuelan musician and producer Arca has managed to merge pop culture and avant-garde in creations where familiar genre landscapes mutate into wild new shapes.
This ability has made her a name that some of the biggest artists call when they want to push the boundaries of popular music. An impressive producer CV that includes names like Björk, Rosalía, Frank Ocean and FKA Twigs speaks for itself.
Björk and Rosalía, along with Shygirl and Sophie, were also on the guest list when Arca released the lavishly ambitious album KiCk i in 2020. The release was followed the next year by four additional companion records. Together, the five KiCk albums form a dizzying glimpse into Arca's fascinating world, where themes of personal transformation and sexuality unfold through deconstructions of everything from pop and reggaeton to electronic club music and ambient.
Arca herself cites artists as diverse as Madonna, Aphex Twin and Wendy Carlos as inspirations. Like her role models, she's not afraid to challenge convention – even on stage, where wild visuals and flamboyant outfits help elevate her musical visions to new futuristic heights.
