Entering the electronic universe of British musician Aya can be an overwhelming experience. Distorted bass lines, noisy beats and unsettling vocals seem to attack you like a swarm of impressions that settle in your body, but you can't help but be mesmerised by the artistic uncompromise.
Aya has long been a part of the experimental electronic scene in the UK, previously releasing music under the alias Loft. However, with the excellent 2021 album im hole, she changed her name to Aya. The album took the music media by storm, including Pitchfork, who named it Best New Music.
Aya is even more fearless on her brand-new album, Hexed!, which pushes her bold experiments even further into an inferno of noise, hard beats and ghostly echoes of electronic genres like grime, UK bass, jungle and gabber.
Behind the eclectic sounds, however, lies an accomplished and personal vision that opens up traumatic experiences, addiction and anxiety, while reflecting on trans identity, feminism and witchcraft as a metaphor for the female energies that society has historically tried to harness and shame. Now Aya is ready to bring her electronic witches' brew to Roskilde Festival, where a wild experience awaits.
