With minimalist effects and slowly unfolding soundscapes, Estonian Duo Ruut create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that combines old folk music traditions and modern sounds.
Their unique music is built around the Estonian zither - a traditional instrument that the two musicians Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi both play sitting opposite each other. Together, they conjure fine musical threads from the instrument's strings, which intertwine to create organic and rich compositions with ethereal vocal harmonies.
Through the traditional instrument, Duo Ruut's music is intimately connected to the folk music heritage of their homeland, but their compositions flow freely between inspirations from folk, jazz, pop and modern classical music. And although their music has a core of mystery, it has a broad appeal, and Duo Ruut has toured extensively and won praise at several international festivals and from media such as MOJO, Songlines and NTS Radio since releasing their outstanding debut album Tuule sõnad in 2019.
The extraordinary duo will release a new album in 2025. However, nothing beats the magic of experiencing the trembling musical presence from the stage when they perform their music live. And you'll get the chance to do just that when they visit Roskilde Festival this summer.
