The syncopated breakbeats of jungle music have undergone a massive renaissance in recent years, thanks in no small part to British artists like Nia Archives and 4am Kru. However, American duo Kumo 99 is ready to take jungle rhythms to new and wild extremes with Japanese vocals, wild punk energy and a dystopian sci-fi vibe.
"Post-national, apocalypse-adjacent, lo-tech love songs for the digital native" is how the duo describe their music on their Bandcamp page, which says a lot about the raw sound universe that may sound like a jungle rave in a Mad Max movie, but which nevertheless contains a life-affirming spirit.
Vocalist Ami Komai has a history in the LA hardcore scene, and she brings that energy to Kumo 99, where the aesthetic of hardcore music and a penchant for mosh pits meets the spirit of the ecstatic rave culture of the 90s. She has found a strong partner in producer Nate Donmoyer, who has previously released music on Ninja Tune under the name Shuttle and has produced for stars like The Weeknd and Pharrell Williams.
On three albums so far, Kumo 99 have created an extremely captivating and original universe, they have toured with both art pop band Magdalena Bay and punk collective The Armed, and their concerts are notorious for their unusual intensity. A new album is on the way and with the new material, Kumo 99 are ready to knock the audience at Roskilde Festival off their feet.
