Lay is an artist who insists on going his own artistic way rather than chasing chart trends. Even more so, the Danish rapper is emerging as a relevant voice that has already built a dedicated fanbase with his authentic tone.
The debut EP M.D.M.A (Mange Døjer Med Angst) – which translates to “Many Deal with Anxiety” – released in 2023, showed an artist entering the Danish rap and R&B scene with a reflective lyrical universe and the courage to peer into the dark corners of the mind. Themes of anxiety, mental vulnerability and growing up in tough environments are elevated by tracks that feature melancholic soul samples, catchy autotune choruses, strong flows and hypnotic trap beats.
Singles like "Run Away", "Purple Rain" and the new release "Forever" show a rapidly evolving artist. True to his DIY ideals, Lay releases his music on the partly self-owned Problembarn Records label, but he has had no problem getting his songs out to a wide audience.
At the same time, Lay has made a strong mark on the live scene, both as support on Danish artist Ussel's tour and with sold-out headline shows. And with that live experience behind him, he has set all sails to deliver a blast of a concert at Roskilde Festival this summer.
