Few artists have been able to mine the essence of South Africa's amapiano genre as infectiously as the twin brothers Banele and Bandile Mbere, who together form Major League DJz. This has made them some of the leading global ambassadors of the electronic genre that is currently taking dancefloors around the world by storm.
The Mbere twins' father was a prominent anti-apartheid activist who was exiled to the US, where they were born. They later moved back to South Africa and now split their time between Johannesburg and the UK, where their amapiano productions have gained a huge following.
One of their fans is super producer Diplo, whose Major Lazer project delivered a collaboration with Major League DJz in the form of the stunning 2023 album Piano Republik. A clear example of how Major League DJz have managed to transform amapiano music with its blend of house-inspired rhythms, jazzy melodies and deep bass grooves, taking it from South African clubs to the global music arena.
And Major League DJz continues to bring amapiano to dance audiences around the world with sold-out arena shows and an appearance at Coachella 2022 as the first ever amapiano act. Surrender when the amapiano kings bring their infectious grooves to Roskilde Festival for the first time.
